☀️🌡️ Heatwave? Here are some ways to keep your student room cooler without a fan or air conditioning
During hot days, a student room can quickly become very warm. Fortunately, there are several simple ways to keep your room as comfortable as possible.
✅ Keep windows and curtains closed during the day
Close windows, blinds, and curtains as soon as the sun starts shining into your room. Dark curtains or even a towel placed in front of the window can block a surprising amount of heat.
✅ Ventilate at the right times
Open your windows early in the morning and late in the evening or at night, when the outside temperature is lower.
✅ Create shade
If your window faces south or west, hang a light-coloured sheet or use reflective window film on the outside of the window to reduce the heat coming in.
✅ Switch off unnecessary appliances
Laptops, televisions, gaming consoles, and chargers all generate heat. Unplug devices when you are not using them.
✅ Cook smart
Try to avoid using cooking appliances during the hottest hours of the day. Opt for a cold meal, salad, or sandwich instead.
✅ Avoid extra heat sources
Do not leave lights on unnecessarily and, if possible, use energy-efficient LED bulbs.
✅ Choose your bedding wisely
Use lightweight cotton sheets and wear loose clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen.
✅ Cool yourself rather than the room
Take a lukewarm shower, place a cool cloth on your neck, or run cold water over your wrists.
✅ Stay hydrated
Drinking plenty of water helps your body cope better with high temperatures.
✅ Create a natural airflow if possible
If the outside air has cooled down in the evening, consider speaking with your neighbours opposite your studio. By opening a window at the front and back of the building and keeping both doors open, you may be able to create a short period of natural air circulation through both rooms. To avoid damage, always secure windows and doors properly so they cannot slam shut due to drafts.
⚠️ Be prepared for summer storms
Heatwaves can sometimes be followed by thunderstorms with strong winds and heavy rain. If a storm is expected, make sure to close any open windows, especially when you are away from your room. This helps prevent water damage and reduces the risk of windows or glass being damaged by sudden gusts of wind causing windows or doors to slam.
🌿 Small habits can make a big difference. By managing sunlight and reducing unnecessary heat sources, you can often keep your student room several degrees cooler, even without a fan or air conditioning.
Stay cool and take care of yourself during the heatwave! ☀️💧🏠
