Recommended indoor temperatures in Belgium
These are practical comfort guidelines to assis the tenants, not mandatory Belgian legal heating temperatures. Individual preferences differ, and people who sit still for long periods may prefer a warmer room, people who feel warm easily may prefer lower temperatures.
The Flemish government recommends around 18–19°C during the day for people who stay at home, and approximately 16°C at night or when away, depending on the building and heating system.

| Room or situation | Recommended temperature |
|---|---|
| Living room / study area while occupied | 19–21°C |
| Bedroom while sleeping | 16–18°C |
| Kitchen | 18–20°C |
| Bathroom when in use | 22–24°C |
| Hallway / entrance | 15–18°C |
| Living room when nobody is home | 16–17°C |
| At night or during longer absences | 15–17°C |
What does this mean for a student studio?
For a furnished studio where a student studies, cooks and sleeps in the same room, I would use 19°C as a reasonable reference temperature during normal occupancy. A student who sits at a desk for several hours may prefer 20°C or 21°C.
A few practical points:
-
- 18°C is not automatically too cold. Many people are comfortable at this temperature with suitable clothing.
-
- 19–20°C is a common living-temperature target. This is consistent with Belgian energy advice.
-
- Avoid excessive cooling. Ventilation remains essential, because condensation and mould can develop when indoor air is humid and surfaces are cold.
- Each degree matters financially. Heating one degree less can reduce space-heating consumption by roughly 7%, although the actual saving depends on the building and heating system.
