๐Ÿ› ๏ธ How to Unclog Your Kitchen Sink โ€” with Baking Soda!

Is your kitchen sink not draining properly?
Donโ€™t panic โ€” and definitely donโ€™t pour in harsh chemicals right away. Thereโ€™s a simple, cheap, and eco-friendly fix using something you probably already have in your cupboard: baking soda and vinegar.

Hereโ€™s how to do it, and how to avoid clogs in the future.

โœ… Step-by-Step: Unclog Your Sink with Bicarbonate

Youโ€™ll need:

  • Boiling water
  • ยฝ cup of baking soda (also called sodium bicarbonate)
  • 1 cup of white vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)
  • A plug or cloth to cover the drain

Instructions:

  1. Boil a kettle of water. Pour about half of it slowly down the drain.
  2. Add ยฝ cup of baking soda straight into the drain.
  3. Pour 1 cup of vinegar slowly down. It will fizz and bubble โ€” this is normal!
  4. Cover the drain with a cloth or plug to keep the reaction inside the pipes. Wait 15โ€“30 minutes.
  5. Pour the rest of the hot water down to rinse it all out.

Thatโ€™s it โ€” blockage gone, no plumber needed.

๐Ÿ”’ How to Prevent Clogs in the First Place

A few easy habits can save you from future trouble:

  • Use a sink strainer. It catches food scraps and stops them from going down the drain.
  • Never pour grease, oil or food fat down the sink. Let it cool, then throw it in the bin.
  • Rinse with hot water after washing up โ€” it helps dissolve leftover soap and grease.
  • Do the baking soda + vinegar trick once a month to keep everything flowing.

It takes five minutes and saves you the hassle (and cost) of a plumber.

๐Ÿ’ก Extra Tip

If youโ€™re living in a student studio, following the Flemish rental regulation, keeping your kitchenette drain clean is your responsibility. A clog isnโ€™t just inconvenient โ€” if it overflows or causes damage, you might be held liable. So be proactive!

๐Ÿงฝ Clean smart. Live easy. Stay ahead of small problems before they become big ones.
